Sport Education
During our Sport Ed. unit we break the 5th grade classes up into 20 teams. Each team must come up with a team name and a mascot to represent their team. Here are some examples:
After choosing a team name and mascot the students then must choose which jobs they are going to do for their team. The jobs available are owner, coach, trainer, equipment manager, publicist, and security.
The owner is the only person from the team who is allowed to speak to the commissioners (Mr. Dooley and Mr. Robilotto) and is also in charge of filling in for someone if they are absent on that day.
The coach is in charge of running the team practice for the day and is also in charge of making sure the substitution patterns are fair and even during the games.
The trainer is in charge of leading the team warm up at the beginning of each class.
The equipment manager is in charge of collecting and putting away all equipment used during class.
The security person is in charge of making sure the playing area is safe and secure before the game.
The teams are also responsible for creating a team poster to be hung on the gym walls. (They are given one art class to work on this...Thanks Mr. Moore)
A typical class starts off with a warm up led by the trainer, followed by a team practice. We then have each team perform their team cheer.
After the cheer we then play two games.
Throughout this entire process the teams are earning points in a number of different ways. We award points based on team work, good sportsmanship, taking care of your responsibilities and following directions.
We award 3 points to the team that wins each game and 2 points to the team that loses (if there is a tie each team receives 2.5 points). In each game we give up to 5 points for sportsmanship and teamwork. We also give up to 5 points for bringing in the mascot each day, for handing in an article each day, for doing the warm up correctly, for doing the practice correctly and for doing the team cheer. So as you can see winning and losing the actual game plays a very small part of our Sport Ed. basketball unit. Our main focus is on sportsmanship and teamwork.
